Recital Policies

Recital Policies

Performance is an essential aspect of our students’ musical education and development. To this end, we encourage our majors and minors to perform on a Student Recital or to present a solo recital.

Division Recitals
Each division may hold a recital for its students each semester. All students are encouraged to participate in these programs. They normally last 45 minutes to an hour and consist of several students each playing one or two pieces. Contact your division coordinator for more information.

Solo Recitals
Students interested in presenting a solo recital should contact Nicole Hackel (hackel@wustl.edu) to reserve a date and performance space. All groups and individuals are responsible for paying all recital-related fees, except for those designated below.

Major Recitals
1)    The department pays the room reservation, collaborative musician, and housekeeping fees for the following:
       •    Junior and senior recitals for undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Music
       •    Up to two recitals, including a senior recital, for undergraduates pursuing a Bachelor of Arts. These recitals may be presented either jointly with another student or individually.
2)     The department produces programs for undergraduate degree recitals if received within the defined timeline.  Program materials, complete with titles, notes, texts, and translations, must be submitted electronically to Megan Stout (meganstout@wustl.edu) at least three weeks before the recital. Please use Microsoft Word or a plain text editor, such as TextEdit or Notepad.

Minor Recitals
1)    The department pays the room reservation, one collaborative musician, and housekeeping fees for one recital for undergraduates pursuing a minor in Music.
2)    A declared music minor may elect to perform one half or full recital. Should the music minor present additional recitals, they are responsible for paying the collaborative musician. Minor recitals must take place at the 560 Music Center in the Recital Hall. In rare cases when audience size is expected to exceed 85 persons, the recital may take place in the Pillsbury Theatre. The student will be responsible for cleaning fees, if required.
3)    Music minors holding a solo recital should use the department's template to create programs for their event, and they may use the copy machine at the 560 Music Center to produce the programs. Please contact Megan Stout (meganstout@wustl.edu) to obtain a copy of the program template.

Rehearsal Guidelines for Collaborative Musicians
The department will support up to 3 rehearsals, one dress rehearsal, and the recital performance.  It will also support recital juries for music majors.  Any additional rehearsals are the responsibility of the student.
