The Department of Music is housed in two buildings on the Danforth Campus, Seigle Hall and Lopata House, and in the 560 Music Center just north of campus on the Delmar Loop. The basement of Lopata House contains our academic classrooms, production, recording, and piano labs, and seven practice rooms. A suite on the first floor of Seigle Hall contains offices for musicology, composition and theory faculty, and a seminar room for smaller classes and meetings. The 560 Music Center, a ten-minute shuttle ride from the Danforth Campus, includes ensemble rehearsal rooms, three performance venues, offices for applied music faculty, eight practice rooms (including resources for percussion, harp, and piano), instrument storage, and administrative and event production offices. Academic classes such as theory and history meet in Lopata House, while applied lessons and ensemble rehearsals take place at the 560.

Performance Venues

At Washington University in St. Louis, we take great pride in providing high quality performance spaces for our students.  Because of our commitment to excellence, we have purchased Steinway pianos for each of our six primary performance venues, where we present classical and other types of music to the campus community.

Our newly-renovated 560 Music Center boasts three distinct performance venues: the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall, the Ballroom/Theater, and the Recital Hall.  These three spaces can accommodate events from solo recitals to full orchestra concerts.

  • The E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall seats 1,115, making it the largest performance venue on campus.  Home to our Symphony Orchestra, this venue also features faculty recitals, performances with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, and visiting artists.
  • The Pillsbury Theatre is the most versatile venue in the 560 Music Center.  Seating approximately 300, it accommodates many types of events, from solo recitals and jazz performances to receptions and social gatherings.
  • With seating for 75, the Recital Hall provides an intimate performance environment.  This space is frequently used for solo recitals, student recitals, and master classes.

Our department also holds performances in various venues on the Danforth campus:

  • Graham Chapel houses the Roland Quest Organ, which was renovated in 2004.  Solo recitals, visiting artist appearances, and choral concerts often take place in this 900-seat venue.
  • Holmes Lounge is a 125-seat venue and is ideal for chamber music or small ensembles.
