Xi Zhang joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 2014 after winning the Associate Principal Viola position with the Kansas City Symphony. An active performer, she has collaborated with internationally renowned conductors, soloists, and chamber musicians in performances throughout the United States and abroad. 

Zhang previously served as a viola instructor at Maryville University and enjoys working with students of all levels. She is dedicated to helping students develop strong technical skills, expressive musicianship, and effective practice strategies while building confidence and encouraging artistic growth. 

Born in Hubei Province, China, Zhang earned both her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Viola Performance from the New England Conservatory, where she studied with Martha Katz and Kim Kashkashian as a recipient of the Ivanka and Bogdana Tchakarova Scholarship. Prior to joining the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, she served as principal violist with the Verbier Festival Orchestra under Charles Dutoit and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach.
